Own heating plan for Augsburg #
A working group of the Augsburg climate justice movement (Fridays for Future Augsburg, Augsburg Climate Camp, etc.) has drawn up its own heat plan for Augsburg. This can be downloaded here: https://www.fff-augsburg.de/material/waermeplan-fuer-augsburg.pdf
Our heat plan is primarily a climate communication tool. We do not claim to be able to plan the details of the heat transition in Augsburg better than the city administration. The latter will one day publish its more detailed plans in the Heat Energy Use Plan, at the latest by the legally prescribed publication date in June 2026.
Our own heating plan is primarily intended to provide information, an overview and an introduction to the topic of the heating transition. We name the aspects that need to be considered when planning heating. The publication of our own heating plan also serves the purpose of waking up local politicians who have fallen asleep on the subject of the heating transition.
On the question of why we went to the trouble of creating our own heating plan, see the diary entry from the climate camp on 30.09.2024. This question is also addressed in the foreword to the heat plan.
Comments #
We are pleased that we have already received a number of comments on our own heating plan. We try to incorporate constructive suggestions for improvement into the next version of our own heating plan after thorough examination. Criticism that we consider justified, but which we cannot or do not wish to address by amending the document, is noted here.
Name ‘Own heating plan for Augsburg’ #
We ourselves were not entirely satisfied with the name of the document “Eigener Wärmeplan für Augsburg”. However, we did not find a better name. We were suggested “Content requirements for the heat plan of the city of Augsburg” as a title. Of course, the document contains content requirements for the city’s heating plans. But it also contains so much more. For example, it provides motivation for the topic and explains the enormous damage that can be averted if the heating transition is implemented sooner rather than later. It provides an overview and an introduction to the topic of the heat transition, evaluates various technologies and makes recommendations to the city council that go beyond the substantive requirements for heat planning.
Ultimately, we have stuck with the name Heat Plan for the document, because even if it does not contain a complete heat plan, by publishing the document we are at least showing more of a plan than the city government is currently doing publicly (= status of initial publication).
Geothermal energy and waste heat utilization are treated too superficially #
We are aware of this. Unfortunately, we are not currently in a position to provide a good assessment of the potential of geothermal energy and waste heat recovery. We simply lack reliable and meaningful data for this. We are trying to carry out the necessary research and deal with both topics in at least a little more detail in a future version of our own heating plan. But this is unlikely to happen in the next few weeks.
Addendum: As far as we could gather from a comment made by a city councillor during the Environment Committee meeting on 07.10.2024, there do not yet appear to be any results of a potential analysis for geothermal energy for Augsburg.
